Lilac lepidolite gemstones are a pretty shade of rose pink lavender color. Natural Lilac Lepidolite ranges from pink to purple in color and has a vitreous (glass-like) to pearly luster. It can be pale pink or a more striking purplish or reddish-pink. It is also sometimes light grey, yellow or colorless. Lilac lepidolite is not enhanced or dyed.
Lepidolite is composed of lithium aluminum rich mica giving these beads a scaly appearance. First discovered in the 18th century and named 'lilalite' because of its lavender-lilac color. However, it was later named "lepidolite" by scientists, from the Greek "lepidos", which means "scale", referring to its scaly appearance caused by flakes of lithium. Lepidolite occurs in granite pegmatites and tin veins. It is often found with other crystals such as tourmaline and quartz. Lepidolite is an important source of lithium, which is the lightest metal in the world. Lepidolite is used for ornamental purposes such as paperweights and ashtrays. It is also made into gemstones and used in jewelry making.
